Apple Tests iOS 4.1 On Mysterious New Device

August 20, 2010
According to a recent report by AppleInsider, Apple is testing its upcoming software update, iOS 4.1, on a whole load of new devices. These include the next generation iPod touch, and an "iPad revision". However, that's not all: a mystery device has also shown up in Apple's iOS testing - one that is as mysterious as it is unrecognizable. As you can see from the image below, AppleInsider has uncovered three "Configuration Descriptors" within iOS 4.1's USB configuration files (latest beta version). All three are labeled as being manufactured by Apple Inc., and almost all three can be identified. First up, there's the next-gen iPod touch. This is listed in the code as "iPod 4,1". Specifically, this refers to the fourth generation of the iPod touch device. Secondly, there's "iProd 2,1". From what is currently know, this refers to a material update to Apple's iPad, as the first generation of the device was labeled as "iProd 1,1" in similar configuration files. However, the surprise comes further down the line, with the third item listed in the software update's USB configuration files - labeled simply as "unknownHardware". As of this moment, we have no idea what this label refers to.

Some are guessing the "unknownHardware" could relate to the upcoming Apple TV revision (reportedly dubbed "iTV"). I guess this rumored hardware will be revealed come September, when Apple is expected to hold its annual music and media event. What would you like this inexplicable piece of hardware to be?
